Davida Gold

Founded in 2003, PlentyOfFish, or POF, is a dating site popular in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the United States. It first gained popularity after appearing in several music videos, like Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” and Flo Rida’s Available.

In 2015, the website was sold to The Match Group, owner of the popular Match.com and other online dating sites.

POF generates revenue through advertisements and premium memberships. Although most of 100 million users have free accounts, paid member enjoy some great added benefits. We joined the service to see how it compares to similar sites.

The POF signup process begins by selecting a username and password, along with specifying your gender, birthday, country, and ethnicity.

Next, you will complete a questionnaire with questions ranging from specific details about yourself to boxes that you can fill in with whatever you deem worth sharing.

PlentyOfFish has a much less scientific matching algorithm than sites like Match.com and Elite Singles.

Ease of Use

POF is simple and fun to navigate, especially since you can access all the features from the dashboard.

The overall design of the site leaves a bit to be desired, but the user experience is good.

If you ever encounter problems, you can take advantage of the site’s in-depth FAQ section.

It can help you with the payment system, the personality test, the mobile applications and much more. There’s also a contact form if you need additional help or have specific questions.

PlentyOfFish review 2017

POF has over 100 million members since it first began, which clearly increases your chances of finding a match on the site. In fact, it is rare to find the number of active users under 500,000 at any given time.

Categories on the site allow you to whittle down your matches and the My Matches feature shows you more targeted profiles suited to your needs.

PlentyOfFish offers users to take compatibility and personality tests. Filling these in gives members a better chance to get to know you. Through these tests, you will also get a better idea of who is more suitable to you and what type of relationship they’re looking for.

The other tests measure other aspects of your relationship needs like the Chemistry Predictor.

The Meet Me feature, which works similar to Tinder, allows you to browse through member profiles quickly, making them with a “yes” if you’d like to get to know them better. If they feel the same way you can begin interacting.

Whenever a member you’d like to start a conversation with is online, you can send a message to their inbox or chat on the IM feature of the site. You don’t have to be a premium member to be able to do this, which is usually the case on other online dating websites. You can even create a favourite or blocked user list.

There’s a free POF application for iOS and Android devices, which allows you to search and communicate with others.

In order to access the app, you will have to fill in a form (one page) which will give POF more information about your background and lifestyle. This includes basic information like your age and location, in addition to more in-depth questions about what you intend to find on the website, whether your parents are married or divorced, and whether you would date someone with kids or not.

Make sure to fill in the optional sections as well, which will give a more detailed idea about your personality to other members. If you pay for your membership, you’ll be able to upload up to 16 pictures on your profile!

PlentyofFish offers a very usable free account to users. If you are interested in the premium features which can get you more attention on the site, you may opt for a paid account.

An account upgrade allows you to add more images to your profile, view extended user profiles, get a ‘read’ notification on your messages, remove ads, see who has viewed your profile, and send three gifts per day.

All users are required to pay for a minimum of three months. Like all other sites, the longer period of time you commit to, the lower your monthly cost will be.

  • A three-month plan costs £12.50 per month.
  • A six-month plan costs £8.50 per month.
  • one-year plan costs £6.78 per month.
NOTE: The full sum must be paid in full at signup.

Final Thoughts

PlentyOfFish is a great service that attracts tons of singles, boasting over two million members in the UK alone.

A standard account is enough for most users and you probably won’t even need it if you are anything like the average person on the site.

That makes POF a high recommendation, providing a place for singles to meet easily for free.
